Vision Zero Action Plan for Delaware County: Survey and Community Engagement Events

The Delaware County Planning Department is working on a county-wide Vision Zero Action Plan to help build a safer transportation system for everyone. Vision Zero is a fundamentally different way to approach traffic safety by establishing a “Strategy to eliminate all traffic fatalities and severe injuries, while increasing safe, healthy, equitable mobility for all.”

Why is Vision Zero important?

One traffic fatality is one too many. Vision Zero is a commitment to eliminating all traffic fatalities and severe injuries. It is a recognition that all road users are vulnerable and that we need to design our transportation system to protect everyone.

What are the benefits of Vision Zero?

Vision Zero has several benefits, including:

Reduced traffic fatalities and severe injuries

Increased safety for all road users, including pedestrians, cyclists, and motorists

More livable and walkable communities

Improved public health

Reduced economic costs associated with traffic crashes

Safety Ambassador Program

What is the Safety Ambassador Program? It is part of Vision Zero Delco, a Vision Zero Safety Action Plan that Delaware County is developing to identify ways to Drive Safe, Roll Safe, and Walk Safe in Delco. To ensure the public is a part of this process, we have partnered with 15 community members to participate in the Safety Ambassador Program as Safety Ambassadors.

Who is a Safety Ambassador and what do they do? An ideal Safety Ambassador cares about traffic safety and wants to make Delco safer for walking, rolling, biking, and driving. They are invested in their community, living in Delco, and have deep connections to their community. Safety Ambassadors received training on community engagement techniques for data gathering and storytelling so that they can conduct engagement activities in their community. Safety Ambassadors are expected to commit approximately 55 hours (total) for engagement and training over a period of 4-5 months. Each Ambassador will receive a $1000 stipend for their participation in the program.

What kind of public engagement? Hosting neighborhood meetings, tabling at a local community event, coffee chats, walk audits, intercepting surveys, leveraging social media for spreading the word and collecting personal stories.
