Celebrating Older Americans Month in Delaware County

Each May, Delaware County Council embraces the opportunity to celebrate National Older Americans Month and shine a spotlight on the contributions of older residents across the County.

Nearly one in every five County residents is a senior. County Council recognizes the contributions of seniors to businesses, volunteer organizations, Veterans’ groups, places of worship, schools, and many other valuable organizations where they invest their time and offer their skills and wisdom. More than ever before, older Americans are working longer and engaging in their communities. Seniors are striving for wellness, focusing on independence, and advocating for themselves and others.

Older Americans Month was first created by President John F. Kennedy in May of 1963 and is a national month of recognition held each May to celebrate the vitality and achievements of older adults. This year’s theme, Powered by Connection, recognizes the profound impact that meaningful relationships and social connections have on our health and well-being. Connectedness plays a vital role in supporting independence and aging in place by combatting isolation, loneliness, and other challenges.

To kick off Older Americans Month, the County Office of Services for the Aging (COSA) held its annual Senior Living Expo on May 5 at Harrah’s in Chester.

The Senior Living Expo featured resources and services provided by vendors ranging from home care agencies and health care systems to County agencies, attorneys, and more. Guests were able to “Ask a Pharmacist” from PerformRx questions regarding medications.

Staff from offices of Senator Tim Kearney and Senator John Kane were on hand to provide information and resources of interest to seniors, including assistance with obtaining/renewing SEPTA Senior Fare Cards, which enable senior citizens age 65 and older to ride free on all Transit Routes and Regional Rail in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.

The event also included music, prizes, raffles, and refreshments.
