The Hero Scholarship Fund of Delaware County was founded in 1977.

The Hero Scholarship Fund provides educational scholarships to the children of Police Officer and Fire Fighters who have died or were killed in the line of duty.

To date, thirty-six (36) children of Police Officers and Fire Fighters have received educational benefits from the Hero Scholarship Fund and more children are eligible for future scholarships. Presently each recipient receives the sum of fifteen thousand dollars ($15,000.00) per semester.

A major source of funding for the Hero Scholarship is the Annual Hero Bowl which is held in the Spring of every year. The Hero Bowl Teams consist of ninety (90) football players from throughout Delaware County and chosen by the Delaware County Football Coaches Association. Cheerleaders are also chosen from throughout Delaware County to participate. In addition, at half-time during the game there is a relay race of high school runners from throughout Delaware County. Businesses from throughout Delaware County support this annual event. The 42nd Annual Hero Bowl was held on 05/31/2018 at Cardinal O’Hara High School, Springfield, PA.

Another major source of funding is the Annual Springfield Run for Heroes which is held in the Fall of every year. Businesses from throughout Delaware County also sponsor this annual event which draws runners from the entire Philadelphia metropolitan area. The 17th Annual Springfield Run for Heroes was held on 10/08/2017.

In addition, jurors of Delaware County may choose to donate their juror stipend to the Hero Scholarship after being summoned to serve as a juror in Delaware County.

The Hero Scholarship Fund owes its success to the members of the Delaware County Council, both past and present, and to the businesses in Delaware County who have actively supported the Scholarship Fund and the Police Officers and Fire Fighters of Delaware County, PA.
