Position Summary

This is a highly complex professional, administrative, and management position responsible for assisting the Director of Parks & Recreation with the planning, organizing, directing, and controlling County Parks & Recreation Services. The assistant director reports to the Director of Parks & Recreation and exercises direct supervision over employees in the Parks & Recreation Department. This position requires excellent organizational planning, negotiating, and diplomatic skills and a great deal of latitude for exercising independent judgment in carrying out essential job duties.


Qualifications

Monitors the activities of the Supervisors and Command Staff to ensure that all objectives are met

At least 3 – 5 years of responsible experience in Parks and Recreation management, operations, and administration.

Graduation from an accredited four year college or university with a degree in Recreation Management.

An equivalent combination of education and experience demonstrating considerable knowledge and exposure to the principles and practices of Parks & Recreation programs

Excellent managerial and leadership skills

Effectively envisions, plans, and implement county and departmental goals and objectives

Supervise, coach, mentor, and when necessary, discipline supervisory, professional and support staff.

Keep Director informed of Parks, Recreation, Programming, Facilities, Parks Maintenance issues and other areas of concern.

Direct and oversee various race trail runs and road races, the Earth Day architect and program leader and the Nature Series Coordinator.

Cost tracking software: implement and manage

Friends Groups: Coordinate & support Friends of Parks Coalition, liaison with Friends Groups

Communication: Facilitate communications, and sort responsibilities and communications, between the many overlapping groups: Conservation District, Planning, Public Works, Park Board, Sustainability Commission, Park Police, Green Space Task Force, Trails Alliance, Friends Groups, and hopefully a Friends Coalition. Make sure input of relevant stakeholders is considered in decisions.

Environmental Stewardship: Increase focus on environmental stewardship, training of maintenance crew in any new policies.
