Summary

The County of Delaware Prison Wardens manages the vendor relationship with the County’s prison services provider as well as supervises County staff with oversight of the facility. The Warden will participate in Jail Oversight Board Meetings and related activities. The Warden will play a critical role, along with the Jail Oversight Board, in the decision to process to de-privatize the current prison.

 

Essential Duties

  • Manage and plan the annual budget
  • Establish financial and programming goals for the institution.
  • Review expenditures and evaluates the success and necessity of prison programs
  • Serve as a primary contact for current prison administration vendor
  • Perform routine inspections of the prison to assess the need for new equipment or repairs to the facility to maintain the safety of the institution
  • Coordinates the response during crisis situations, such as an emergency or a natural disaster
  • Work with the Jail Oversight Board to adopt, evaluate and revise prison policies and procedures, including treatment programs, job training, recreation, inmate procedures and classifications, and discipline.
  • Oversee all inmate programs
  • Adhere to state and federal regulations and legislation and updating programs to reflect this.
  • Monitor the operations of the institution and making changes to ensure maximum productivity, efficiency, and safety
  • Provides oversight to contract service providers as appropriate; serves on special project committees regarding a variety of department related operations
  • Serves as a public relation contact for the facility as needed/required

Qualifications

  • Bachelors degree from an accredited college or university and six (6) years of professional level work experience in corrections or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Eight years of experience as a Correctional Officer in a prison which includes, five years of experience supervising the activities of Correctional Officers, two of which have been at the Correctional Captain level.
