Delaware County Provides Update on Recent Cybercriminal Attack that Impacted County Systems

Media, PA — The following is a statement from Delaware County:

“Delaware County is sharing an update on the recent cybercriminal attack that disrupted County systems and operations. We have been tirelessly working the last few weeks to resolve the issue and have been able to fully restore County operations at this time.

We appreciate everyone’s patience and support throughout these difficult last few weeks.

Further, as previously noted, we investigated the event with support and assistance of third-party cybersecurity counsel, forensic specialists, and key other parties. Through the investigation, we determined the attackers were able to gain access to the County’s network and to access data maintained within the network. We are still investigating with assistance from cybersecurity specialists to confirm the full scope of the recent attack, including confirming the scope of risk to data maintained within portions of the County’s network. We will determine any next steps in response to the attack based on the investigation results. We will move quickly to make all appropriate notifications pursuant to applicable law if we identify access to sensitive data.

As we previously noted, the County had made significant updates since 2020. That was critical to our response here, where we were able to utilize secure backup data to minimize impact to County operations. We continue to update and our security posture as the privacy and security of information in our care is a critical point of focus. Unfortunately, in this instance we were victims of a sophisticated cybercriminal attack on the County’s systems that is all too common today.
