Delaware County Unveils Modernized Emergency Telecommunications System

On Friday, March 13, Delaware County Council held a ribbon cutting ceremony to inaugurate the early and under-budget completion of the County’s modernized emergency telecoms infrastructure.

In 2020, Council recognized the need to upgrade the aging telecommunications system the County had relied on for critical emergency services. County Council immediately moved to address the issue head on through a large-scale project to migrate the County’s emergency communications to the EF Johnson Technologies system.

Council Chair Richard Womack spoke regarding the County’s commitment to fulfilling its promise to keeping its residents safe: “Our County continues to put the public safety of its residents first and I’m proud to inaugurate this crucial improvement modernization to our emergency telecoms systems.”

Leaders from around Delaware County, including the County’s delegation to the PA House and Senate, came together to celebrate the system modernization. Sen. Tim Kearney, Sen. John Kane, Rep. Lisa Borowski, and Rep. Leanne Kreuger, also attended the ceremony, signifying the collaborative effort that took place to make today a possibility.

The new emergency radio communications system enables first responders to communicate more effectively, securely, and across agencies.

The improvements include:

  • 99% on-street portable radio coverage
  • Secured lines of communication for first responders in the field
  • Ability to interlope with surrounding counties and state agencies, ensuring effective cross-agency responses
  • Coreless radio technology enabling faster and more stable connections of radios
