Delaware County Urges Residents to Stay Safe Amidst Freezing Temperatures

County also provides update on recent weather-related deaths

Delaware County, PA — Delaware County Council encourages residents to take necessary precautions during the ongoing cold weather. Spending only a few minutes outside in cold weather can pose a danger to people’s health, particularly for older adults, those with a medical condition, and those otherwise exposed to the elements. Delaware County has information on cold weather resources available at delcopa.gov/health/cold-information.

The Delaware County Medical Examiner’s Office has responded to multiple deaths during cold weather conditions over the past few days. Out of respect for families, the Medical Examiner’s Office does not release case-specific details, but these individuals were not unhoused at the time of death. Each person had a home address, and two were located outside and away from their residence. Determination of the final cause and manner of death is pending.

Although none of these individuals were unhoused, extreme cold temperatures can pose a risk to everyone, even those who have a home. County officials continue to work on prevention efforts and want to ensure residents are aware of resources available to them.

Resources available for people experiencing homelessness

Delaware County has a Code Blue policy and extreme cold weather protocols in place to provide options for vulnerable residents. During Code Blue conditions, homeless outreach, shelter coordination, and emergency notifications go into effect to prevent weather-related illnesses or death. Residents who are unhoused and experiencing extreme cold temperatures are encouraged to utilize local shelters and warming locations. Click here for a map of warming centers across Delaware County. The Delaware County Department of Human Services provides a range of resources from emergency sheltering to homeless prevention programs. Residents can visit the links below to access information and resources available to Delaware County community members.

Please be mindful of friends, neighbors, older adults, and individuals without shelter or in unstable conditions as they are more vulnerable to the cold. A quick check-in can make a significant difference.

  • During periods of cold weather, the County-funded Mental Health Partnerships (MHP) Outreach Team circulates frequented areas in Delaware County with the goal of placing individuals in need of shelter at a warm facility.
