We understand that the loss of a loved one can be overwhelming. The Delaware County Office of the Medical Examiner (DCOME) is here to guide you through the process. The following steps will help you understand what to expect and what actions may be required.
1. Identification and Notification
- A legal Next of Kin (NOK) must be identified before any decisions can be made.
- If you are the NOK, our office will contact you directly, however, feel free to contact us at 610-891-5953.
- If multiple family members are involved, one individual should be designated as the primary contact.
2. Case Review and Examination
- Our office will conduct the necessary investigation, which may include an external examination or full autopsy.
- Toxicology testing may be performed when appropriate.
- These processes take time to ensure accuracy and completeness- Sometimes up to eight weeks for toxicology.
3. Selecting a Funeral Home
- The NOK is responsible for selecting a funeral home or cremation provider.
- Once selected, the funeral home will coordinate directly with our office for the release of your loved one.
- A signed authorization form from the NOK is required before release. AUTHORIZATION TO RELEASE TO FUNERAL HOME/CREMATORY
4. Required Documentation
- All required authorization forms must be completed online through our secure system.
- This ensures proper documentation, verification, and a time-stamped record for legal purposes.
5. Death Certificate
- The Medical Examiner completes the cause and manner of death.
- The funeral home will assist you in obtaining certified copies of the death certificate. The DCOME does not issue death certificates.
6. Personal Property
- Personal belongings in our custody will be documented and released to the funeral home with your loved one unless circumstances dictate otherwise.
- Our staff will coordinate directly with you to arrange retrieval if items are left with us.
7. Ongoing Communication
- Our office will provide updates as they become available.
- Due to the nature of investigations, some results (such as toxicology) may take several weeks to months.
